We’ve already established that there are a lot of elements which come together to create the all important “first impression” made by Your Ebook Cover Design.
Color plays a critical role in your ebook cover design – but as important as color is the typography used. Typography refers to the typeface used. When it comes to choosing the right font, it’s more than just a matter of “serif” or “sans serif”.
The font you use on your ebook cover design communicates as much if not more than the colors you choose.
“Many people, designers included, think that typography consists of only selecting a typeface, choosing a font size and whether it should be regular or bold. For most people it ends there. But there is much more to achieving good typography and it’s in the details that designers often neglect.
Type appears at first to be a rigid medium ; but like other rigid media, it is plastic to the living spirit of a craftsman. ”
They say a picture paints a thousand words – in this case, Garr Reynolds of Presentation Zen shares pictures in the form of video in his post Typefaces send us signals. In the post, he shares two videos that tell this story of the role typefaces play in design better than I can here. I’ll also share the most recent video Typefaces give us signals from erik spiekermann on Vimeo.
If this is your first foray into the world of design – it may come as a surprise that the style of the letters plays such an important role in design.
“Typographical design should perform optically what the speaker creates through voice and gesture of his thoughts.”
El Lizzitsky as quoted at Inspire Me
The typeface you choose conveys as much meaning and message as not only the colors you choose, but the words you choose as well. The typeface you choose for your words is as important as the clothes you would wear to an important business meeting or job interview. The right words can’t do the job of selling your ebook without the right clothes to wear. The typeface you choose is indeed an important part of the clothes your words will wear.
